Hampi, in Karnataka's Vijayanagara district, is the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara Empire and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. Its temples, palaces and markets are spread across a boulder-strewn landscape on the south bank of the Tungabhadra River, so most visitors explore it by cab over two or three days.

How to reach Hampi

Hampi has no railway station or airport of its own. The nearest railhead is Hosapete Junction, 13 km away, and the nearest airport is Jindal Vijayanagar Airport near Ballari. Best time to visit Hampi

October to February is the best time to visit Hampi: days are warm and dry and mornings are cool enough for climbing Matanga or Hemakuta Hill. March to May is very hot, so plan sightseeing for early morning and late afternoon. June to September brings the monsoon — the landscape turns green and the Tungabhadra runs full, but some river crossings and coracle rides may stop.

How many days do you need in Hampi?

One full day by cab covers the highlights — see our Hampi Heritage Day Tour. Two days lets you see both the Sacred and Royal Centres without rushing, and three days adds Anegundi and the Tungabhadra Dam — exactly what the Hampi Heritage Weekend package covers.

Getting around Hampi

Hampi's monuments are spread over roughly 25 km², with the Sacred Centre near Hampi Bazaar and the Royal Centre closer to Kamalapur. A Hampi sightseeing cab is the easiest way to cover both in a day, especially with family, elders or luggage. Autos and bicycles work for short hops around Hampi Bazaar, and battery vehicles run the last stretch to the Vittala Temple.
